How overtime pay is calculated

Under US federal law (the Fair Labor Standards Act), hourly employees earn overtime for hours over 40 in a single workweek. Overtime pay is at least 1.5 times the regular rate. For a $20 rate, overtime is $30 an hour.

Overtime is counted per week, not per pay period. If you work 50 hours one week and 30 the next, you earned 10 hours of overtime, even though the two weeks average out to 40.

Some states add their own rules. California pays 1.5x after 8 hours in a day and 2x after 12 hours in a day. If you are not sure which rules apply to you, your state labor department can tell you.

Overtime pay questions

How is overtime calculated?
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5 to get your overtime rate. Multiply that by your overtime hours. A $20 rate and 6 overtime hours is $30 × 6 = $180 in overtime pay.
What is time and a half for $18 an hour?
$27 an hour. Time and a half means 1.5 times your rate: $18 × 1.5 = $27.
When does overtime start?
Under federal law, after 40 hours in a workweek. A workweek is any fixed 7-day period your employer picks. Some states also have daily overtime, such as California after 8 hours in a day.
Does overtime count across a two-week pay period?
No. Overtime is figured one week at a time. 45 hours in week one is 5 hours of overtime, even if you only work 35 hours in week two.
What is double time?
Pay at 2 times your hourly rate. Federal law does not require it. Some employers and some states pay it, for example California after 12 hours in a day.
Are salaried workers paid overtime?
Some are. Salaried employees under a federal pay threshold, and those whose duties do not qualify as exempt, still earn overtime. This calculator works with any hourly rate; divide a weekly salary by the hours it is meant to cover (often 40) to get one.
